China’s Huawei signs Wi-Fi patent licensing agreement with HP

Chinese tech giant Huawei has announced a multi-year global cross-licensing patent agreement with HP that includes HP’s use of certain Huawei Wi-Fi technology patents.

The deal will allow HP, the U.S. technology company headquartered in Palo Alto, California, to use specific Huawei Wi-Fi patents across its lineup of computers and peripheral devices, according to a statement released by Huawei. In turn, the Chinese tech firm will secure rights to select HP patents,

HP was the world’s second-largest personal computer manufacturer in 2025, trailing only China’s Lenovo, in a market of roughly 270 million units, according to market research firm Gartner data published early this year.

Patent licensing agreements

Huawei reported more than 260 patent licensing agreements as of year-end 2025, and participated in major patent pools.

In recent years, the company has struck similar deals with firms including Ericsson, Xiaomi, Sharp, and Vivo, and renewed its licensing agreement with Finland’s Nokia.

Huawei generated about $630 million in patent licensing revenue in 2024 out of a total annual revenue of $118 billion and, over the years, it has paid out nearly three times more in royalty fees than it has received.

In 2025, the company allocated 192.3 billion yuan (about $27.5 billion) to research and development, representing 21.8% of its total annual revenue.

The Chinese tech firm ranks among the world’s top international patent applicants: according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Huawei filed the highest number of international patent applications in 2025 and remained, alongside South Korea’s Samsung and LG, among the top three corporate applicants at the European Patent Office (EPO) last year.

Bilateral agreements

Huawei maintains bilateral agreements and participates in patent pools covering mobile communication technologies, Wi-Fi, and audio-video encoding. The company claims to hold more than 165,000 active granted patents worldwide.

The agreement with HP comes despite ongoing U.S. trade restrictions in place against Huawei since 2019, which have constrained the Chinese firm’s access to select American semiconductors and technologies.

These trade measures, however, have not prevented Huawei from continuing to close intellectual property agreements with American firms: in 2024, it reached a multi-year cross-licensing patent deal with Amazon. EFE
