EFE president urges climate speeches to reflect “citizens’ feelings”

São Paulo, Sep 4 (EFE)EFE President Miguel Ángel Oliver stressed on Thursday the importance of ensuring that climate speeches connect with society’s emotions during the opening of the 3rd Latin American Green Economy Forum (FLEV) in São Paulo.

According to Oliver, the emotional pulse of the population is often missing from political debates and official speeches. He called it an “absent variable at negotiation tables” and a “silent switch” that can either trigger or paralyze climate action.

Citizens’ emotions and climate action

To support his point, Oliver cited a study by Latam Intersect PR and Delta Analytics. The research analyzed over one billion digital interactions in Latin America and found that collective emotions about the climate crisis are geographically fragmented.

For example, Brazil, host of the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP30) in November, is characterized by hope, while in Mexico, fear predominates.

“These patterns expose an uncomfortable truth: official climate speeches are often disconnected from citizens’ feelings, and that creates a dangerous disengagement,” Oliver said in his remarks at the FLEV.

Disinformation and the digital sphere

Oliver also warned that the spread of disinformation in the climate sphere “continues at full speed.” He urged forum participants to keep working to guarantee a safe, informative digital space for citizens.

He welcomed the fact that the FLEV is being held in the run-up to COP30, saying the event can become a platform to “move into action” by putting strategies and commitments into practice to accelerate the transition to clean, renewable energy.

“Well-designed climate policies will not only mitigate climate impacts but also generate economic growth, jobs, and reduce poverty,” he predicted.
