UAE to support Kazakhstan in renewable energy development and digitization

Astana, May 12 (EFE).- The United Arab Emirates is to support Kazakhstan in developing renewable energies, supercomputers, and smart city systems, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said Monday in Astana during an official visit to the Central Asian republic.

“We would like to promote projects linked to the development of renewable energies. Also, our partnership with Kazakhstan in digital transformation will boost the development of supercomputers and smart city systems,” he said during a meeting with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

In particular, Zayed Al Nahyan talked about the upcoming construction of a wind power project in southern Kazakhstan with a maximum output of 1 gigawatt.

Eighty percent of the project’s shares will belong to the Emirati companies Masdar and W Solar, while the remaining twenty percent will belong to Kazakh companies.

Tokayev asserted that the United Arab Emirates is among the 10 largest investors in Kazakhstan.

“In 2024, the flow of direct investments from the UAE more than doubled, reaching record levels of over $1 billion,” he said.

He also announced that within the framework of the crown prince’s visit, more than 20 business agreements worth $5 billion will be signed.

Supercomputer cluster

Kazakh Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry Zhaslan Madiyev told reporters that one of the agreements provides for constructing a supercomputer cluster in Kazakhstan.

“This is the largest supercomputer in Central Asia, which will make it possible to test artificial intelligence models. It will be useful for the selection and launch of emerging projects,” he said.

According to Madiyev, the project will also be useful for universities “for their research.”

In addition, he said that another agreement provides for the construction of a data center in Astana. The Emirati IT company Presight will run the facilities, aimed at supporting various projects, including smart city development.

Memoranda of cooperation in transport, the legal sector, the oil and gas industry, banking, and the merchant marine, among others, were also signed. EFE
