Astana, Apr 16 (EFE).- Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev<\/strong>, confirmed on Tuesday that a flood alert<\/strong> would remain in place until the end of April<\/strong> as he toured regions hit by the worst flooding in decades in the Central Asian republic.<\/p>\n

“I think the next ten days will be the most critical<\/strong>, but we have already taken steps to rebuild the entire country and mitigate the consequences of the natural disaster<\/strong>,” the office of the Kazakh Presidency<\/strong> quoted him as saying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The floods<\/strong> have affected several regions<\/strong> in the country’s north, west, and center, primarily the Northern<\/strong> Kazakhstan province bordering Russia.<\/p>\n

“These are tough<\/strong> times. It’s a disaster of national magnitude<\/strong>,” acknowledged Tokayev<\/strong>, who noted “obvious positive<\/strong> signs” as water has begun to recede gradually in some areas.<\/p>\n

A state of emergency<\/strong> has been declared in six districts of the Northern Kazakhstan region, where over 2,000 homes<\/strong> were flooded, and 10,345 people were evacuated<\/strong>, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Tokayev spoke with residents<\/strong>, promising that the government would cover all expenses<\/strong> for those affected<\/strong> by the floods.<\/p>\n

“As of today, a one-time payment is being made to all flood victims<\/strong>. Following assessments by the commission, compensation<\/strong> will be paid to the local population for damage<\/strong> to private property. For residents whose homes cannot be repaired, new housing will be constructed,” he promised.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Additionally, he said that victims could expect moratoriums<\/strong> on their loans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tokayev also recalled that he had canceled the Astana International Forum<\/strong> set for June and urged the government to cancel or limit<\/strong> other significant activities to redirect resources<\/strong> toward dealing with the flood’s aftermath.<\/p>\n
