Brasilia, April 27 (EFE).- Indigenous<\/strong> leaders from across Latin America convened in the Brazilian capital this week to push for the rights of native peoples and draft a collective agenda for COP30, which includes measures ranging from land demarcation to fair energy transition, participants at the Campamento Tierra Libre<\/strong> (Free Land Camp) told EFE.<\/p>\n

Marking the 20th anniversary<\/strong> of the camp, held from April 22 to 26, nearly 8,000 individuals participated in what is considered Brazil\u2019s largest indigenous mobilization<\/strong>, featuring traditional rituals, debate plenaries, vigils, and a crafts fair.<\/p>\n

The Campamento Tierra Libre primarily aims to defend<\/strong> the rights of Brazilian Indigenous<\/strong> people to preserve their territories,.<\/p>\n

“It has also become a hub<\/strong> for global indigenous communities<\/strong> to come together,” said Dinamam Tux\u00e1<\/strong>, coordinator of the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB), in an interview with EFE.<\/p>\n

At this year’s camp, Latin American indigenous leaders worked on drafting<\/strong> a document outlining a united strategy<\/strong> for the upcoming United Nations Climate Conference (COP30<\/strong>). The conference is scheduled to take place in 2025 in the Brazilian city of Bel\u00e9m, located in the Amazon region, and is expected to be a crucial event for indigenous communities.<\/p>\n

“The COP itself is a platform<\/strong> for political visibility<\/strong>. We use it to present grievances<\/strong> and where world powers gather to make decisions and set goals. Within this space, we have been acting together<\/strong> since last year to solidify an agenda for COP30,” Tux\u00e1 said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Solidarity and Sustainability<\/h3>\n

For Juan Carlos Jintiach<\/strong>, Executive Secretary of the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities<\/strong>, crafting this roadmap<\/strong> is a significant challenge but also a crucial tool in the fight for indigenous rights, aiming to strengthen their negotiating power with governments.<\/p>\n

Jintiach, a member of the Shuar<\/strong> people from the Ecuadorian Amazon<\/strong>, noted the mobilization in the gardens of the Esplanada dos Minist\u00e9rios<\/strong> in Brasilia unites all living indigenous peoples in the region. “We reflect that solidarity, crossing borders. It’s a symbol of unity,” he commented.<\/p>\n

Key demands<\/strong> by Latin American indigenous peoples include the development and enhancement of public policies<\/strong> ensuring their rights<\/strong>, land demarcation and protection, and other guarantees for sustainable socioeconomic development in the region.<\/p>\n

According to Jintiach, it’s vital<\/strong> that indigenous peoples and other members of civil society remain vigilant<\/strong> and committed to addressing the climate crisis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He advocated for a “fair, equitable<\/strong> energy transition with clear, transparent<\/strong> rights” and urged society to closely monitor<\/strong> the upcoming COP29 in Azerbaijan<\/strong>, “an oil-producing country,” this November.<\/p>\n

Indigenous peoples, guardians of nature<\/h3>\n

Rafael Danilo Arbel\u00e1ez<\/strong>, representing Colombia’s Cubeo<\/strong> indigenous community, emphasized to EFE the crucial role of indigenous peoples in conserving<\/strong> nature and preserving biodiversity, key in combating the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

“Indigenous peoples perform a significant service<\/strong> for humanity<\/strong> by protecting vast areas of biodiversity<\/strong>, forests, water, animals, and fish… They destroy, and we try to protect,” Arbel\u00e1ez stated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He stressed that indigenous peoples deserve<\/strong> respect and their own territories where they can “live in peace<\/strong>, crafting their art, and maintaining their traditions<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

“An indigenous person without territory<\/strong> is not indigenous. We depend on nature<\/strong>, the forests, the rivers, and they depend on us,” Arbel\u00e1ez concluded. EFE<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
