{"id":112126,"date":"2024-05-16T20:43:37","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T18:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/?p=112126"},"modified":"2024-05-16T21:30:14","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T19:30:14","slug":"threats-on-the-migratory-route-in-guatemala-dengue-arrests-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/threats-on-the-migratory-route-in-guatemala-dengue-arrests-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Threats on the migratory route in Guatemala: dengue, arrests, climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By David Toro Escobar<\/p>\n<p>Puerto Barrios (Guatemala), May 16 (EFE).- <strong>Thousands of migrants<\/strong> cross the border between <strong>Honduras and Guatemala<\/strong> every day on their way to the United States, <strong>facing threats<\/strong> from tropical diseases like dengue, arrests by security forces and subsequent deportation, and the impact of a route hit by climate change.<\/p>\n<p>At the <strong>El Corinto<\/strong> border, between Guatemala and Honduras, the <strong>Guatemalan Red Cross<\/strong> assists migrants in need of medical help.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur job is to alleviate a little suffering and dignify the lives of people who are in transit,\u201d explains <strong>Mariana Bonilla<\/strong>, who works with the <strong>Red Cross<\/strong> at the Care Center for Migrants and Refugees (CAPMIR) located on the Guatemalan side of the border.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Every morning, Bonilla, 31, and her team scour the border highway, surrounded by African palms, banana trees, and the imposing Motagua River\u2014the largest in Guatemala\u2014searching for groups of migrants to guide them to points where they can <strong>receive support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Within their care center, supported by the <strong>International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies<\/strong> (IFRC), migrants receive both medical and psychosocial assistance. \u201cMany come with trauma from their passage through the <strong>Dari\u00e9n jungle between Colombia and Panama<\/strong>,\u201d explains Bonilla.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-1Lm-ADAz1o?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Dengue and climate change<\/h2>\n<p>Two kilometers past the border, on the migratory route, is the village of <strong>Jimeritos<\/strong>, a farming community mainly dedicated to banana cultivation. For six years, they have converted their small community hall into <strong>a shelter for migrants<\/strong> to rest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are motivated to work with migrants. They leave their countries to seek a better life for their families, and here we give them what we can because we don\u2019t know when we will have the same need,\u201d says <strong>Felicita Palencia<\/strong>, a Jimeritos resident trained by the Red Cross to help migrants.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The community hall has a bedroom with a capacity for 12 people, and according to village leaders, there are nights when they receive <strong>up to 30 migrants seeking refuge<\/strong> before continuing their journey to the Mexican border in Tec\u00fan Um\u00e1n, located about 540 kilometers at the other end of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The community continues to help despite facing difficulties, such as <strong>severe dengue epidemics affecting the Izabal department<\/strong>. In 2023, more than 500 cases were recorded, prompting health authorities to place the region on red alert\u2014a disease that also affects migrants.<\/p>\n<p>On May 2, in the community room, the Red Cross gathered children from Jimeritos\u2019 public primary school <strong>to educate them on hygiene and sanitation measures to eliminate the dengue-transmitting mosquito<\/strong>, as well as tools to identify the disease\u2019s symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlos Linares<\/strong>, who has lived in this village hosting migrants for 42 years, tells EFE that their biggest concern is climate change, especially with the approaching rainy season. In years like 2001 and 2020, many houses were destroyed by storms.<\/p>\n<p>The dry season in 2024 has been tough as well, with Guatemala reaching temperatures up to <strong>44 degrees Celsius<\/strong> in March and April. EFE\/David Toro <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <!-- close group --> <\/div> <!-- close row --> <\/div>\n<h2>A dangerous route<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThis part of the road is the most difficult to get to the United States because there are a lot of police and they <strong>can send us back to Honduras<\/strong>,\u201d explains Mario Alvarado, a Honduran migrant seeking the \u201cAmerican dream,\u201d to EFE.<\/p>\n<p>In 40-degree heat, Alvarado crossed the border, skirting the Motagua River and African palm plantations to avoid detention by Guatemalan authorities.<\/p>\n<p>This is Alvarado\u2019s third attempt to reach the United States. He travels with compatriot <strong>Danny G\u00e1mez<\/strong>, with whom he was deported from Texas a few months ago after working as a painter in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Like Alvarado and G\u00e1mez, thousands of migrants try to cross Guatemala every year. So far in 2024, nearly <strong>8,000 have been detained<\/strong> by security forces for deportation, according to the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter how many times they deport us. If there are no conditions to live in Honduras, we will always find a way to leave again,\u201d Alvarado says, before walking away along a plantation path with his companion.
