Manaus, Brazil, Jun 13 (EFE).- Ilan Goldfajn<\/strong>, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)<\/strong>, on Thursday called on the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean to strengthen the rule of law to allow companies to invest confidently<\/strong> in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need regulations<\/strong> that remain in force and promote sustainable business practices<\/strong>, and we must also help the region address citizen security<\/strong> against organized crime,\u201d said the president of the multilateral organization in Brazil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is also necessary to \u201cimplement access to stability<\/strong> and social protection, to basic services for the population,\u201d because although companies \u201cknow how to handle their projects, how to handle risk,\u201d they know less \u201cabout uncertainty and the overall environment<\/strong>,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Goldfajn made these remarks during Sustainability Week, organized by IDB Invest<\/strong>, the private arm of the IDB, currently being held in Manaus<\/strong>, the heart of the Brazilian Amazon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The IDB president participated in a panel where he urged strengthening public-private partnerships<\/strong> to scale impact on development<\/strong> at a crucial moment for the entire Latin American and Caribbean region, especially the Amazon.<\/p>\n

The region, known as the \u2018lungs of the world,\u2019 spans nine countries<\/strong> and is experiencing \u201can irreversible ecological tipping point,<\/strong> losing its capacity to recover from disturbances such as droughts or forest fires,\u201d scientists warn, Goldfajn said.<\/p>\n

Collaborative approach<\/h3>\n

For this reason, now more than ever, an \u201cintegrated approach<\/strong> with the public sector, local communities, the private sector, and multilateral development banks like the IDB\u201d is needed to \u201cdevelop and sustainably protect<\/strong> the Amazon for the millions of people here and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goldfajn noted that in recent years the IDB<\/strong> has made protecting the Amazon a key priority<\/strong>, evident in projects such as Amazon Forever,<\/strong> launched last year, or the Amazon Financial Network<\/strong>, created between IDB Invest and IFC, the private arms of the IDB and the World Bank, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to unite countries, regions, and the Amazon<\/strong> because we need to work together to reach our goals<\/strong> at the speed we need,\u201d Goldfajn said, also arguing that one of the \u201ckey lessons\u201d the institution has learned in its more than six decades of history is \u201clistening to local populations.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to come from Washington and simply tell the locals exactly what solutions<\/strong> they need,\u201d but rather, they are the ones who \u201chave the knowledge<\/strong>, cultural practices, and a close connection to the land, so we must engage with local communities<\/strong> and respect their interests and culture<\/strong>,\u201d concluded the president.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During Sustainability Week<\/strong>, dozens of presentations have been given to around 800 physical participants (and more than 10,000 virtual attendees)<\/strong>, many of them executives from sectors such as banking, technology, and food.<\/p>\n

Agrotechnology<\/strong>, new green financing<\/strong> instruments, the use of artificial intelligence<\/strong> in development, and challenges arising from the climate crisis<\/strong> are some of the topics addressed at the event aimed at promoting sustainable investments<\/strong> in the region.
