Astana, Jul 4 (EFE).- Belarus<\/strong> became the tenth full member<\/strong> of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)<\/strong><\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The leaders of the SCO countries signed<\/strong> the document regarding Belarus’s accession<\/strong> at the start of their 24th summit<\/strong>, held in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Belarus has completed the necessary procedures to become a full member<\/strong> of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” said Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev<\/strong>, as he opened the summit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Belarus’ Shanghai Cooperation Organization membership made official<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Following the announcement, the SCO leaders signed the document<\/strong> confirming Belarus as their tenth member<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The SCO, established in 2001<\/strong>, now comprises Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The previous country to become a full SCO member was Iran, whose membership was approved last July.<\/p>\n

“Through our joint efforts<\/strong>, strengthening the Shanghai spirit<\/strong> and promoting its principles, we have turned the SCO into one of the most influential<\/strong> and prestigious<\/strong> structures,” said the Kazakh president in his opening remarks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Tokayev<\/strong>, the fruitful interaction among SCO countries “sets the development direction for the entire Eurasian continent<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

“In nearly a quarter of a century<\/strong>, our organization has become an important mechanism<\/strong> in the system of international relations, significantly contributing to ensuring stable growth<\/strong> and general progress<\/strong>,” added the president. EFE<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
