Astana, Mar 28 (EFE)<\/strong> \u2013 European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas<\/strong> met Friday with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev<\/strong> at his residence in Almaty<\/strong>, Kazakhstan\u2019s largest city, to discuss deepening cooperation between the European Union<\/strong> and the Central Asian nation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, Central Asia is of great importance<\/strong>\u2014not only in terms of resources and its geographic relevance to regional stability, but also for its investment potential,\u201d Kallas said, according to a statement from the Kazakh presidency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The leaders reviewed several priority areas of bilateral collaboration, including trade<\/strong>, transportation<\/strong>, digitalization<\/strong>, global security<\/strong>, and water resource management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Visa Facilitation Agreement for Kazakh Citizens<\/h3>\n

One of the central topics of Kallas\u2019s visit was the finalization of an agreement to simplify the issuance of Schengen visas<\/strong> for Kazakh citizens. President Tokayev welcomed the initiative, stating, \u201cThis step opens up broad opportunities to strengthen people-to-people contacts and trade ties with European countries<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kallas had earlier told Kazakh state media that all 27 EU member states supported launching negotiations<\/strong> on both a visa facilitation agreement<\/strong> and a readmission agreement<\/strong>, under the guidance of the European Commission.<\/p>\n

Caspian Corridor and Global Gateway Investments<\/h3>\n

Another highlight of the visit was the discussion of the Caspian transport corridor<\/strong>, a key logistical route that bypasses Russian territory. Kallas underlined its strategic importance, particularly since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the start of the war in Ukraine<\/strong>, we had to find alternative, secure, and efficient trade routes<\/strong> between Europe and Asia that did not pass through Russia. The Caspian corridor<\/strong>\u2014into which the EU has invested \u20ac90 million<\/strong>\u2014is crucial not only for these goals, but also for its impact on regional development,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also highlighted progress made under the EU\u2019s Global Gateway initiative<\/strong>, announcing that in 2024, more than 300 villages and 2,000 schools<\/strong> across Kazakhstan will gain internet access<\/strong> through the program.<\/p>\n

A Strategic Partnership<\/h3>\n

Kazakhstan holds a unique position in the EU\u2019s regional strategy. It was the first Central Asian country<\/strong> to sign an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement<\/strong> with the European Union. This long-standing agreement underscores the depth and breadth of the bilateral relationship.<\/p>\n
