San Juan, May 21 (EFE).- Leaders of Puerto Rico’s universities<\/strong> agreed Wednesday that studies in English and Spanish<\/strong>, as well as hybrid courses and internships<\/strong>, are key to attracting international students.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Representatives and experts discussed opportunities at the \u201cEducational Tourism: Puerto Rico as an Academic Destination\u201d<\/strong> forum.<\/p>\n

Thanks to a partnership between Agencia EFE<\/strong> and GFR Media<\/strong>, the event was held on Wednesday at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino Hotel<\/strong> in San Juan.<\/p>\n

Bilingual programs for international students<\/h2>\n

The president of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico<\/a>, Rafael Ramirez<\/strong>, said at the conference that his institution offers bilingual programs<\/strong> in all master’s degrees and law, optometry, and nursing, making it possible to attract foreign students.<\/p>\n

\u201cInternational students come looking for accreditations, that they are transferable, that the programs are homologated, and that wherever they want to go they can take their degree,\u201d Ramirez said during the panel \u201cThe Island as a Classroom\u201d.<\/p>\n

For his part, Javier Carri\u00f3n<\/strong>, in charge of International Affairs at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR)<\/a>, was delighted to say his school has the most foreign students on the island (about 600). Their goal, though, is to increase the number.<\/p>\n

Carri\u00f3n highlighted the initiative of the UPR’s COOP courses<\/strong>, which allow students to obtain university credits through supervised internships.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe campuses are assigned a coordinator for all academic programs. The student remains part of the required orientation between the student and the UPR teacher,\u201d explained the university representative during his speech.<\/p>\n

Hybrid courses<\/h2>\n

Likewise, Gladys Nieves<\/strong>, president of EDP University<\/a>, highlighted their hybrid mode<\/strong> with face-to-face and remote studies for health courses.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents work in the United States, take online courses, and come to Puerto Rico to do the clinical part. They only stay for three months of the year,\u201d Nieves said.<\/p>\n

Finally, Ana G. M\u00e9ndez University’s (UAGM)<\/a> strategy to attract international students, according to Rafael F. Nada<\/strong>l, vice president of International Affairs, is short graduate and postgraduate degrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cShort degrees<\/strong> are a market opportunity,\u201d said Nadal, adding that his goal is to focus more on one-year master’s degrees as, for example, there are in Spain.<\/p>\n

Also participating in this event was Francisco Mill\u00e1n<\/strong>, Spain\u2019s Economic and Commercial Manager in Puerto Rico, who explained the different initiatives implemented in Spanish universities to attract students from other countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have 1.7 million university students<\/strong> in Spain, of which 200,000 are foreigners, about 12%, and the proportion of foreigners is much higher in postgraduate, masters, doctorates, than people who study bachelor’s degrees, because of recognition,\u201d Mill\u00e1n stressed.<\/p>\n
