Astana, Jun 14 (EFE).- The Russian atomic agency Rosatom<\/a><\/strong> has been selected to lead the consortium tasked with building Kazakhstan\u2019s first nuclear power plant<\/strong>, the Central Asian country\u2019s Atomic Energy Agency<\/strong> announced Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cRosatom<\/strong> has been designated leader of the international consortium<\/strong> for the construction project of Kazakhstan\u2019s first nuclear power plant<\/strong>,\u201d the agency said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Kazakhstan evaluates global nuclear technology providers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In addition to Russia, Kazakh authorities<\/strong> also considered several potential nuclear technology providers, including China\u2019s CNNC<\/strong>, South Korea\u2019s KHNP<\/strong>, and France\u2019s EDF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just hours after naming Rosatom, Kazakh authorities revealed that China may take the helm in constructing a second nuclear facility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to see Chinese technologies in Kazakhstan for the construction of another nuclear power plant,\u201d said Almasadam Satkaliyev<\/strong>, head of Kazakhstan\u2019s nuclear agency.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

He added, \u201cThere are not many countries in the world capable of managing the entire nuclear cycle on their own. And, of course, China is one of the states that possesses all the necessary technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A final decision on the second plant will be made \u201cafter analyzing all the details,\u201d<\/strong> but China is currently the leading candidate<\/strong> for that partnership.<\/p>\n

Referendum signals public support for nuclear energy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev<\/strong>, Kazakhstan held a national referendum on October 6, 2024<\/strong>, regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country\u2019s south<\/strong>. The initiative was approved by 71.12% of voters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt is of strategic importance for us to create a new energy industry that will provide a solid foundation for dynamic economic development in the coming decades,\u201d the Kazakh leader explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Tokayev<\/strong> stated that Central Asia\u2019s largest country \u201cneeds not one, but three nuclear power plants.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Historic shift after decades of post-Soviet nuclear skepticism<\/strong><\/h2>\n
