Medell\u00edn, Colombia, Jul 17 (EFE).-<\/strong> The Santaf\u00e9 Shopping Center in Medell\u00edn<\/strong> has unveiled the 15th edition of the world\u2019s largest living flower carpet<\/strong>, featuring a 14-meter-tall hot air balloon sculpture<\/strong>, as a prelude to the city\u2019s upcoming Flower Festival<\/strong>, which begins August 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have this grand, majestic, and emblematic flower carpet, the largest living carpet in both Colombia and the world, which will be on display for 48 days in the Medell\u00edn plaza,\u201d Mar\u00eda Fernanda Bertel<\/strong>, general manager of Santaf\u00e9 Shopping Center, told EFE at the unveiling on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A floral tradition rooted in Antioquian culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The plaza housing the carpet spans 1,000 square meters<\/strong>, with 800 square meters covered by 25,000 plants<\/strong>, including more than 200,000 petunias and marigolds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

All the flowers used in the installation come from various nurseries in eastern Antioquia<\/strong>, the department of which Medell\u00edn is the capital.<\/p>\n

What began fifteen years ago as a tribute to the region\u2019s silletera tradition<\/strong>\u2014by showcasing \u201cthe city\u2019s largest silleta\u201d<\/strong>\u2014has become a major tourist attraction<\/strong> during the Flower Festival<\/strong>, according to Bertel.<\/p>\n

Silletas<\/strong> are wooden frames<\/strong> that were once used by local farmers to carry loads on their backs. Today, they serve as the base for artistic floral creations<\/strong> depicting scenes of everyday life.<\/p>\n

Tourism, commerce, and cultural celebration at Santaf\u00e9<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bertel noted that the 2024 edition of the flower carpet attracted 2.8 million visitors<\/strong>, including locals, Colombians from other regions, and international tourists. This year, organizers hope to surpass that figure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Economically, the \u201cflower season\u201d is the second most important of the year<\/strong> for the shopping center\u2019s co-owners, after December. The exhibition coincides with major citywide events<\/strong> such as Colombiamoda<\/strong> in late July and the Flower Festival<\/strong> in early August.<\/p>\n

According to Bertel, the season accounts for between 27% and 30% of the annual sales<\/strong> for the center\u2019s business partners.<\/p>\n

The Journey of the Flowers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This year\u2019s artistic theme, The Journey of the Flowers<\/strong>, invites visitors to Santaf\u00e9 to \u201cbecome adventurers\u201d<\/strong> and explore figures that adorned previous editions of the carpet<\/strong>\u2014such as a seahorse, parrots, hummingbirds, and butterflies<\/strong>\u2014now displayed throughout the shopping center, Bertel said.<\/p>\n

For the first time, visitors can also view the flower carpet from its center and at a height of 2.8 meters <\/strong>by stepping into the basket of the hot air balloon<\/strong> that forms part of the installation. Bertel described the experience as a \u201cgift\u201d to Colombia and the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

She added that this year presents an \u201cadditional challenge,\u201d<\/strong> as the exhibition includes three complementary gardens in other plazas<\/strong> of the shopping center, showcasing \u201cmajor works\u201d from previous editions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Although the Flower Festival runs from August 1 to 10<\/strong>, the floral installation at Santaf\u00e9 Shopping Center will remain open to the public until August 31<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
