S\u00e3o Paulo, Sep 4 (EFE)<\/strong> \u2013 Representatives of Indigenous peoples<\/strong> and environmental NGOs<\/strong> on Thursday called on authorities and businesses in S\u00e3o Paulo to urgently advance forest conservation<\/strong> by promoting sustainable economic activities<\/strong> and granting rights to nature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Leandro Kara\u00ed Mirim<\/strong>, a Guaran\u00ed Indigenous leader<\/strong> and communicator for the Museum of Indigenous Cultures<\/strong> in S\u00e3o Paulo, told the 3rd Latin American Green Economy Forum (FLEV)<\/strong>, organized by Agencia EFE<\/strong>, that Brazil\u2019s environmental legislation should grant \u201crights\u201d to forests<\/strong>, following Bolivia\u2019s example<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Spiritual and legal perspectives<\/h2>\n

Kara\u00ed Mirim highlighted the \u201cspiritual\u201d impact of deforestation<\/strong>, likening tree felling<\/strong> to \u201cdismemberment.\u201d<\/strong> He also criticized as \u201cregrettable\u201d<\/strong> the delays by authorities in demarcating Indigenous lands<\/strong>, despite Brazil\u2019s Constitution requiring it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This concern was echoed by Leonardo Sobral<\/strong>, forestry director of the NGO Imaflora<\/strong>, who said that demarcating Indigenous lands<\/strong> and creating conservation units<\/strong> are the most effective ways to halt deforestation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cUndesignated public forests (those not classified as reserves or conservation units) are the areas most vulnerable to logging,\u201d<\/strong> Sobral said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Beyond conservation: sustainable production<\/h2>\n

Sobral argued that conservation alone is insufficient<\/strong> and called for boosting the sustainable production of native fruits<\/strong> to give forest-dwelling communities<\/strong> viable economic alternatives<\/strong> to deforestation.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe must reconcile production with conservation,\u201d<\/strong> he said, citing latex<\/strong> and a\u00e7a\u00ed extraction<\/strong> as examples.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Estefan\u00eda S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, of Argentina\u2019s ProYungas Foundation<\/strong>, suggested another strategy: working with companies to help preserve the wild areas they own<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe must encourage the private sector to invest part of its revenue in conservation,\u201d<\/strong> S\u00e1nchez said, stressing that such efforts must be \u201cproactive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The private sector as part of the solution<\/h2>\n

One ProYungas project<\/strong> helps companies measure the carbon stored<\/strong> in preserved wild areas so they can include it in their environmental footprint<\/strong> and share the results publicly as a reputational asset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez noted that private-sector initiatives<\/strong> could add another 15% to the 15% of Argentine territory<\/strong> already protected by conservation units.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe productive sector is not the problem; it is a key actor in finding a solution,\u201d<\/strong> she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
