S\u00e3o Paulo, Sep 5 (EFE)<\/strong> \u2013 Uruguay\u2019s foreign minister, Mario Lubetkin<\/strong>, has highlighted his country\u2019s progress in certifying agricultural products<\/strong> to comply with the European Union\u2019s new anti-deforestation regulation<\/strong>, which takes effect in December<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking virtually on Thursday at the 3rd Latin American Green Economy Forum (FLEV)<\/strong>, organized by Agencia EFE<\/strong> in S\u00e3o Paulo, Lubetkin pointed to \u201csignificant steps\u201d<\/strong> in preparing Uruguay\u2019s agricultural exports<\/strong> for the EU rules.<\/p>\n

Platforms to certify sustainable production<\/h2>\n

Among the measures, he cited the creation of platforms<\/strong> to certify that products such as soy<\/strong> and beef<\/strong> do not come from deforested areas<\/strong>, in line with European trade requirements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the Uruguayan state<\/strong> itself is responsible for managing the certification process in order to avoid imposing \u201cadditional burdens\u201d<\/strong> on exporters.<\/p>\n

Lubetkin said the new system guarantees \u201ctransparency\u201d<\/strong> for trade partners and positions Uruguay as a \u201creliable supplier for the world\u2019s most demanding markets.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is possible to produce high-quality food sustainably,\u201d<\/strong> he said, while warning that environmental policies should not \u201ccompromise\u201d global food security.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Agriculture as an ally, not an enemy<\/h2>\n

According to Lubetkin, the agricultural sector<\/strong> is not an \u201cenemy\u201d of the environment<\/strong> but can be an \u201cally\u201d<\/strong> when managed with \u201cresponsibility and long-term vision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond agriculture, he also highlighted other Uruguayan initiatives, such as issuing the country\u2019s first sovereign bonds tied to environmental indicators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Uruguay\u2019s role ahead of COP30<\/h2>\n

Looking ahead to the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP30)<\/strong>, to be held in November in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil<\/strong>, Lubetkin said Uruguay intends to \u201ccontribute actively\u201d<\/strong> to achieving \u201ceffective solutions\u201d<\/strong> to the environmental crisis.<\/p>\n
