Moscow, Nov 12 (EFE).\u2014<\/strong> Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/strong> and Kazakh leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev<\/strong> strengthened bilateral relations Wednesday with the signing at the Kremlin<\/strong> of a declaration on alliance and strategic partnership<\/strong>, held one week after the Central Asian president visited the White House.<\/p>\n

Tokayev said the document holds \u201chistoric significance,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as it reflects \u201cunshakeable mutual trust and broad prospects for cooperation between our peoples.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

He thanked Putin for his personal contribution to deepening bilateral relations and called him \u201ca statesman of global stature.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Strengthening cooperation after U.S. visit<\/h2>\n

Tokayev\u2019s visit to Russia came days after his trip to the United States<\/strong>, where he attended a U.S.\u2013Central Asia summit<\/strong> chaired by President Donald Trump<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He said negotiations with Putin, which began Tuesday with an informal meeting and continued Wednesday with both delegations, were \u201cfrank<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cproductive.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Expanding energy partnership<\/h2>\n

A key topic was energy cooperation<\/strong>, particularly in oil and gas production and transit.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe agreed to strengthen our alliance in the production, transport and supply of oil and petroleum products, coal and electricity. We examined in detail gas cooperation, in particular the supply of gas to Kazakh regions bordering Russia and its transit to third countries,\u201d Tokayev said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to the declaration, Moscow and Astana pledged to create conditions for the unhindered transport of energy resources<\/strong> and for joint projects, including a partnership in the exploration and development of new deposits.<\/p>\n

Both sides will also prioritize cooperation in the gas sector<\/strong>, including the protection of cross-border infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Managing sanctions and maintaining trust<\/h2>\n

Kazakh Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov<\/strong> said his government is working to ensure that U.S. sanctions on Russian oil firm Lukoil<\/strong>, present in Kazakhstan since 1995, do not affect exploration at the Karachaganak field.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cNo external challenge can destroy, much less undermine, the strong foundation of mutual trust between Russia and Kazakhstan,\u201d Tokayev said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Putin, who welcomed Tokayev with full honors at the Grand Kremlin Palace<\/strong>, said Russia is considering increasing gas supplies to Kazakhstan<\/strong> and expanding cooperation on rare earth metals<\/strong>, a topic Tokayev discussed recently with Trump in Washington.<\/p>\n

Economic and investment outlook<\/h2>\n

Official data show Russia is among Kazakhstan\u2019s top three trade partners<\/strong>, with bilateral trade totaling nearly $30 billion<\/strong>.
