{"id":194863,"date":"2025-11-13T00:16:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T23:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/?p=194863"},"modified":"2025-11-13T00:21:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T23:21:39","slug":"kazakhstan-premieres-film-on-survival-of-two-spaniards-in-soviet-gulag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/kazakhstan-premieres-film-on-survival-of-two-spaniards-in-soviet-gulag\/","title":{"rendered":"Kazakhstan premieres film on survival of two Spaniards in Soviet gulag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"263\" data-end=\"529\"><strong data-start=\"263\" data-end=\"301\">Astana, Kazakhstan, Nov 12 (EFE).\u2014<\/strong> <em data-start=\"302\" data-end=\"313\">La tregua<\/em> (<strong data-start=\"315\" data-end=\"328\">The Truce<\/strong>), a film about two Spaniards with opposing ideologies struggling to survive in a <strong data-start=\"410\" data-end=\"426\">Soviet gulag<\/strong> on the <strong data-start=\"434\" data-end=\"451\">Kazakh steppe<\/strong>, premiered Wednesday in the capital of Kazakhstan to strong local interest.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"531\" data-end=\"784\">Local producer <strong data-start=\"546\" data-end=\"566\">Yerlan Bekjozhin<\/strong> told EFE the story \u201c<strong data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"634\">moved many people, especially young viewers<\/strong>,\u201d whose reactions during the screening he described as \u201c<strong data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"716\">very valuable for us.<\/strong>\u201d The premiere was organized by the <strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"771\">Spanish Embassy<\/strong> in Astana.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"791\" data-end=\"837\">From Spain to Kazakhstan \u2014 and Netflix next<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1067\">The film was previously shown at the <strong data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"926\">73rd San Sebasti\u00e1n International Film Festival<\/strong> and later released in Spain. Following its Kazakhstan debut, <em data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"999\">La tregua<\/em> will also be available on <strong data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1037\">Netflix<\/strong>, reaching global audiences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1069\" data-end=\"1339\">Bekjozhin said it was essential for young people to know this history, noting that for decades \u201c<strong data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1208\">the relevant materials were classified.<\/strong>\u201d Only after the <strong data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1257\">collapse of the Soviet Union<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1291\">Kazakhstan\u2019s independence<\/strong> could these stories be openly told, he added.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1561\">Despite the midweek premiere, many Kazakhs attended the event and left the theater <strong data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1441\">visibly moved<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1442\" data-end=\"1445\" \/>\u201cI\u2019m very impressed. I knew nothing about this before,\u201d said a young Kazakh student.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-194863-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" poster=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rss-efec34afc6f-3eb3-4a0d-aae8-1771c6ebb694.jpg\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rss-efec34afc6f-3eb3-4a0d-aae8-1771c6ebb694-hd-web.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rss-efec34afc6f-3eb3-4a0d-aae8-1771c6ebb694-hd-web.mp4\">https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/rss-efec34afc6f-3eb3-4a0d-aae8-1771c6ebb694-hd-web.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h2 data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1610\">Remembering shared history through film<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1793\"><strong data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1623\">Antonio<\/strong>, a Spaniard living in Kazakhstan, said it was \u201c<strong data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1689\">very emotional<\/strong>\u201d to see the film and learn about fellow Spaniards who ended up there after the <strong data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1790\">Spanish Civil War<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1795\" data-end=\"2127\">Directed by <strong data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1829\">Miguel \u00c1ngel Vivas<\/strong>, the movie tells the story of two Spaniards from opposite sides of the conflict who find themselves in the <strong data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"1958\">Karlag labor camp<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"1962\" data-end=\"1975\">Karaganda<\/strong>, one of the largest gulags in the Soviet Union, which imprisoned <strong data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2076\">hundreds of thousands of people<\/strong> from around the world between <strong data-start=\"2107\" data-end=\"2124\">1937 and 1959<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2129\" data-end=\"2300\">They eventually befriend a <strong data-start=\"2156\" data-end=\"2179\">Kazakh intellectual<\/strong>, portrayed by <strong data-start=\"2194\" data-end=\"2212\">Farabi Akkozov<\/strong>, an actor based in Spain, despite the brutal and dehumanizing conditions of the camp.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2333\">Humanity amid brutality<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2335\" data-end=\"2454\">Amid the <strong data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2381\">cold, violence, and mutual hatred<\/strong>, the two Spaniards agree to a <strong data-start=\"2412\" data-end=\"2423\">\u201ctruce\u201d<\/strong> to help one another survive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2590\">Many in the audience left the theater in tears. \u201c<strong data-start=\"2505\" data-end=\"2531\">An overwhelming story,<\/strong>\u201d said one woman after the two-and-a-half-hour screening.
