{"id":208540,"date":"2026-02-11T19:38:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T18:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/?p=208540"},"modified":"2026-02-11T20:05:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T19:05:41","slug":"latin-america-cybersecurity-on-alert-as-nearly-38-of-threats-go-unseen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/latin-america-cybersecurity-on-alert-as-nearly-38-of-threats-go-unseen\/","title":{"rendered":"Latin America cybersecurity on alert as nearly 38% of threats go unseen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"692\"><strong data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"455\">Mexico City, Feb 11 (EFE).-<\/strong> Nearly <strong data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"505\">38% of cyber threats detected globally<\/strong> are no longer identified as traditional malware or trigger visible alerts, but instead operate covertly within networks, according to the <strong data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"691\">Compromise Report 2026 by <a href=\"https:\/\/lumu.io\/\">Lumu Technologies<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"998\">\u201cThe greatest risk today is not the attack that triggers alerts, but the one that goes unnoticed,\u201d warned <strong data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"822\">Ricardo Villadiego<\/strong>, founder and CEO of <strong data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"864\">Lumu Technologies<\/strong>, stressing that a growing share of current intrusions evade preventive controls and remain active for long periods without detection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1290\">The report specifies that <strong data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1049\">18.9% of detections<\/strong> correspond to active \u201cmalicious behaviors,\u201d while <strong data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1109\">18.7%<\/strong> are linked to phishing domains in operation. Both categories reflect activity that goes beyond blocked perimeter attempts and directly affects organizations\u2019 internal environments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1568\">\u201cPermanent visibility into compromise has become a pillar of modern security operations,\u201d Villadiego added. He noted that this shift requires moving from a prevention-centered logic to one based on the <strong data-start=\"1492\" data-end=\"1567\">continuous validation of an organization that has already been breached<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"146\" data-end=\"209\"><strong data-start=\"150\" data-end=\"209\">Exposed sectors and cybersecurity risk in Latin America<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1727\">The sectors most affected by these threats include <strong data-start=\"1661\" data-end=\"1709\">education, telecommunications and government<\/strong>, the report said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1949\">According to the findings, the malicious use of anonymization services such as <strong data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1824\">Tor and VPNs<\/strong> affects <strong data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1842\">22.1%<\/strong> of cases in the education sector, followed by telecommunications at <strong data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1920\">19.6%<\/strong> and government at <strong data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"1948\">16.4%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1951\" data-end=\"2264\">Specialists warned that these figures are particularly relevant for <strong data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2036\">Latin America<\/strong>, where universities and public agencies often operate with open environments, high device turnover and limited cybersecurity resources, conditions that facilitate attacks designed to persist without causing visible disruptions.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1120px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-rss-efe-singlepost-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/rss-efe26899b84598a4e0de44cd45d5587156f33f8eefbw-1120x747.jpg\" alt=\"File photo showing a person using a computer in Cartagena, Colombia. AI agents are part of the operating environment and must be treated as such from a risk and control perspective,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2758\">Christian Torres<\/strong>, CEO of <strong data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2778\">Kriptos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2781\" data-end=\"3007\">Industry players warned that many insider-threat and information-governance programs still fail to address this new risk, creating additional gaps amid accelerated digitalization.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3009\" data-end=\"3042\">From alerts to decision-making<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3044\" data-end=\"3187\">The rise of silent threats is also affecting daily security operations, increasing <strong data-start=\"3127\" data-end=\"3160\">fatigue and operational noise<\/strong> among cybersecurity teams.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3189\" data-end=\"3484\">\u201cWe are seeking an approach that empowers cyber defenders through comprehensive defense to deliver responses by enhancing human expertise with artificial intelligence (Wise), allowing teams to focus on high-impact strategic decisions,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3448\">Stephen Fallas<\/strong>, Americas Field CTO at <strong data-start=\"3472\" data-end=\"3483\">Trellix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3486\" data-end=\"3658\">Fallas stressed that integrating workflows and unified threat analysis is key to prioritizing the riskiest assets and delivering effective responses before incidents occur.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3660\" data-end=\"3692\">New priorities for the region<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3694\" data-end=\"3931\">According to specialists, these findings are pushing public and private organizations in <strong data-start=\"3783\" data-end=\"3800\">Latin America<\/strong> to redefine cybersecurity priorities, with greater emphasis on <strong data-start=\"3864\" data-end=\"3930\">visibility, resilience, data governance and responsible AI use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3933\" data-end=\"4178\">The assessment points to the need for coordinated action among <strong>technology providers, independent experts, the public sector, and academia<\/strong> to strengthen regional preparedness for emerging cyber risks and build trust in the digital economy.
