Astana, Feb 13 (EFE).-<\/strong> The new United States ambassador to Kazakhstan<\/strong>, Julie M. Stufft, highlighted Washington\u2019s interest in the Central Asian country\u2019s reserves of critical minerals<\/strong>, stressing Kazakhstan\u2019s right to decide how to use its own resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs for US interest in critical minerals in Kazakhstan, our goal is that Kazakhstan has the full availability of choices in determining how to use its own mineral wealth for the benefit of its citizens,\u201d the diplomat said during her first appearance before local and foreign media.<\/p>\n

She added that many US companies are already active in Kazakhstan\u2019s mining sector<\/strong>. She also recalled that the United States is one of the world\u2019s leading powers in the industry.<\/p>\n

In that context, Stufft said the US can provide \u201ca great deal of technology\u201d to help Kazakhstan explore and develop its mineral resources.<\/p>\n

Securing global supply chains<\/h2>\n

The ambassador noted that critical minerals<\/strong> are not only a bilateral issue. She said they are central to global supply security.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there is a second issue, and that issue is a global issue\u2014it\u2019s securing a supply chain<\/strong> for these critical minerals for the entire world to be able to use,\u201d Stufft said.<\/p>\n

Last week, Washington hosted a meeting of around 50 ministers to discuss creating a \u201cfair and predictable\u201d market<\/strong> for access to critical minerals.<\/p>\n

\u201cKazakhstan<\/strong>, of course, was one of those countries,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

Broader US\u2013Kazakhstan cooperation<\/h2>\n

Beyond minerals, Stufft welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding<\/strong> between Washington and Astana. She said it allows the two sides to \u201ctalk about how to develop\u201d bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

She also said the United States is closely following Kazakhstan\u2019s plans for constitutional reform<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In addition, the ambassador highlighted Kazakhstan\u2019s role on the Peace Board promoted by President Donald Trump<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cKazakhstan is always at the forefront of multilateral diplomacy, and President Trump really respects President (Kassym-Jomart) Tokayev’s<\/strong> views on how best to promote reconstruction (in Gaza) and what that will look like in the coming years,\u201d she concluded.
