{"id":241638,"date":"2026-08-24T20:35:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T18:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/?p=241638"},"modified":"2026-08-24T21:14:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T19:14:39","slug":"osce-criticizes-lack-pluralism-kazakhstan-praises-election-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/osce-criticizes-lack-pluralism-kazakhstan-praises-election-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"OSCE criticizes lack of pluralism in Kazakhstan, praises election organization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International observers from the <strong>Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)<\/strong> said on Monday that Sunday&#8217;s parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan, won by the ruling Adilet party, were <strong>technically well organized but lacked political pluralism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The OSCE noted that voters faced few alternatives, as all contesting parties support the policies of <strong>President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev,<\/strong> who has been in power since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report presented today at a press conference by the mission heads, the election campaign was conducted in an <strong>orderly manner,<\/strong> although the winning Adilet party enjoyed an <strong>&#8220;undue advantage.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The OSCE reported that the media provided <strong>scarce editorial and analytical coverage<\/strong> of the elections, which reduced voters&#8217; ability to make an informed choice.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the organization criticized pressure on independent journalists that generated &#8220;pervasive self-censorship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The elimination of the right to stand independently and the rule that candidates for the new <strong>145-member Kurultai<\/strong> (unicameral parliament) could only be nominated by political parties from their members limited political participation and electoral competitiveness,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The document highlighted that the election winner, <strong>Adilet<\/strong>, recently merged with the former ruling party <strong>Amanat<\/strong> and dominated the campaign. As a result of the merger, it benefited from the organizational structures and resources inherited from the party formerly known as <strong>Nur Otan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the OSCE noted that the election authorities enjoyed the <strong>confidence of the participating parties<\/strong>, conducted an extensive voter information campaign, and made significant efforts to ensure easy access to polling stations and facilitate participation for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<h3>Adilet secures parliamentary majority<\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/ruling-adilet-party-wins-parliamentary-majority-in-kazakhstan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initial official data<\/a>, the Kazakh ruling party <strong>Adilet<\/strong> secured a parliamentary majority with <strong>71.17% of the vote<\/strong> in the elections for the new Kazakh unicameral parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, four other parties crossed the 5% electoral threshold: <strong>Auyl<\/strong>, with 6.26% of the vote; <strong>Respublica<\/strong>, with 5.56%; the <strong>Democratic Party of Kazakhstan &#8220;Ak Zhol&#8221;<\/strong> (5.21%); and the <strong>National Social Democratic Party<\/strong> (5.11%).
