{"id":53178,"date":"2022-12-01T00:11:02","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T23:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/?p=53178"},"modified":"2022-12-01T00:31:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T23:31:01","slug":"access-to-safe-drinking-water-reduces-emigration-in-guatemala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/access-to-safe-drinking-water-reduces-emigration-in-guatemala\/","title":{"rendered":"Access to safe drinking water reduces emigration in Guatemala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Puerto Morelos (Mexico), Nov 30 (EFE).- Access to basic services such as <strong>drinking water<\/strong> is important to prevent families in the &#8220;dry corridor&#8221; of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala from migrating to other countries, said <strong>Daniel Oporto<\/strong>, director for <strong>Latin America at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterforpeople.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Water for People<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with EFE, Oporto spoke about the work that the international civil society organization is carrying out as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazosdeagua.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lazos de Agua<\/strong><\/a> initiative in four municipalities in <strong>Guatemala<\/strong>, located in the highlands and in scattered rural towns, where houses are separated by up to one kilometer.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua are part of what is called the <strong>Central American Dry Corridor<\/strong>, the main area from where people migrate to the United States and other places to escape poverty,&#8221; he explained from the Mexican Caribbean, where the results of FEMSA Foundation&#8217;s Lazos de Agua program were presented.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are studies that show that providing basic services such as <strong>water and sanitation<\/strong> prevents migration and we are making progress on this,&#8221; he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The organization works with communities, among others, that are over 3,000 meters above sea level, where &#8220;agricultural activities such as coffee production are not enough,&#8221; the specialist explained.<\/p>\n<p>Water and sanitation, he said, are <strong>triggers for development and economic activity<\/strong>, not only to improve health conditions, but also because they allow agricultural activity to face climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The dispersed rural towns where Water for People and Lazos de Agua, an initiative of Mexico\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.femsa.com\/en\/femsa-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FEMSA Foundation<\/a>, operate are where the state government has limited access and the construction of water and sewage systems is not always technically possible and financially viable.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53188\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"53188\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/access-to-safe-drinking-water-reduces-emigration-in-guatemala\/imagen-access-to-safe-drinking-water-reduces-emigration-in-guatemala\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/rss-efedf90c6f608f4becc5a3a76f4e4b686db185992d3w.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1920,1281\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;EFE&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;The director for Latin America at Water for People, Daniel Oporto, speaks on Wednesday during an interview with EFE in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo State (Mexico). EFE\/Alonso Cupul<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>ACCESS TO SAFE TOILETS<\/h2>\n<p>Oporto regretted that progress cannot be made at a faster pace, as estimates indicate that close to 2 million people remain under these conditions, living in <strong>inequality and poverty<\/strong> without access to water and a <strong>safe and decent toilet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Not having access to a safe bathroom is an unthinkable issue in the 21st century, where those who suffer most are <strong>girls, adolescents and women<\/strong> because they are exposed to all kinds of risks when defecating or urinating in the open where there is no bathroom. That is a sign of the inequality and poverty faced in Latin America and Guatemala,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The expert indicated that the <strong>Lazos de Agua<\/strong> program is a strategic alliance that, with a systemic approach, builds municipal water and sanitation facilities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Building water systems in rural and dispersed rural areas is more expensive than building in an urban or peri-urban area, but in Latin America about <strong>40% do not have access to water and safe toilets<\/strong>. Poverty in Latin America is in rural areas,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For Oporto, the water issue requires greater efforts and a radical change of mentality.
