{"id":69979,"date":"2023-05-30T17:29:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T15:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/?p=69979"},"modified":"2023-05-30T20:53:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T18:53:35","slug":"spain-backs-trans-caspian-route-in-kazakhstan-to-counter-russian-sanction-dodging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/en\/spain-backs-trans-caspian-route-in-kazakhstan-to-counter-russian-sanction-dodging\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain backs Trans-Caspian route in Kazakhstan to counter Russian sanction dodging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Astana, May 30 (EFE).- <strong>Spain<\/strong> is looking to bolster its cooperation with <strong>Kazakhstan<\/strong>, specifically through the <strong>Trans-Caspian Transport Route<\/strong>, as a strategic move to help inhibit Russia from sidestepping Western-imposed sanctions, Spanish Secretary of State for Trade <strong>Xiana Margarida M\u00e9ndez B\u00e9rtolo<\/strong> said Tuesday in the Kazakh capital, Astana.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Agencia EFE on the sidelines of the <strong>Seventh Kazakhstan-Spain Business Council meeting<\/strong>, M\u00e9ndez said one of Spain&#8217;s central focuses with Kazakhstan is to <strong>&#8220;reinforce the Trans-Caspian corridor,&#8221;<\/strong> which serves as an alternative pathway, <strong>bypassing Russian territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She pointed out that the geopolitical shift caused by &#8220;Russia&#8217;s incursion into Ukraine has rewritten the <strong>trade rules<\/strong> for certain products pertaining to Russian exports and imports.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>M\u00e9ndez also highlighted the crucial role of international collaboration in &#8220;preventing the circumvention of sanctions&#8221; that the West has levied on Russia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A significant part of the commerce traversing this corridor pertains to Kazakhstan,&#8221; M\u00e9ndez B\u00e9rtolo pointed out, emphasizing that it is essential for Kazakhstan to establish itself as a <strong>key platform for trade, industry, and inbound investments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This is especially true when we talk about <strong>preventing sanction dodging<\/strong>,&#8221; she asserted, underlining that countries in Central Asia maintain strong commercial relations with Moscow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>M\u00e9ndez added that the Trans-Caspian corridor is instrumental in &#8220;propelling trade from the EU towards Asian markets like China, with Kazakhstan playing a pivotal role.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SdDeCwtpyF8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>She noted that last year, trade between Spain and Kazakhstan reached an impressive <strong>3 billion euros<\/strong>, marking a 70% surge compared to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Joining M\u00e9ndez in Astana were representatives from 35 Spanish firms.<\/p>\n<h2>Expertise, experience and active involvement<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Kanat Sharlapayev<\/strong>, the co-chair of the Kazakhstan-Spain Business Council and director of the Bayterek Fund, revealed that 150 Kazakh private companies partook in the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Sharlapayev indicated an eagerness for Spanish proposals regarding<strong> technological expertise, experience in investments, and the active involvement of investors<\/strong> in Kazakh projects.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Given that these three conditions are met, we will extend an invitation to participate in debt capital, shares, or support under the umbrella of export financing,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since 2012, the Kazakhstan-Spain Business Council meetings have been routinely convened with the objective of <strong>enhancing economic and trade cooperation and facilitating joint projects<\/strong>.
