Notably, the <strong>International Federation of Falconers<\/strong> was recently established, including specialists from Kazakhstan, Turkey, Russia, Mongolia, and Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0A Millennia-Old Tradition<\/h3>\n<p>Muptekeyev is one of 200 Kazakh <strong>falconers<\/strong>, known as &#8220;<strong>burkutchi<\/strong>,&#8221; who faithfully preserve this nomadic <strong>heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I learned the secrets of eagle training from my father, he from his grandfather, and so on, up to <strong>seven generations<\/strong>. As long as I can remember, there has always been an eagle in my house,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He is now <strong>teaching<\/strong> his 18-year-old son, Yersultan, the <strong>art of falconry<\/strong>, which <strong>UNESCO<\/strong> declared in 2010 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Falconry has been practiced for <strong>thousands of years<\/strong> on the Central Asian steppe and has long been a <strong>tradition<\/strong> in places like China, the Arab world, Europe, and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>In Kazakhstan, the eagle is a <strong>national symbol<\/strong>, emblematic of <strong>freedom<\/strong> and <strong>independence<\/strong>, reminiscent of the hordes of Genghis Khan.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-97108-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" poster=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rss-efe1b6389a3-bdf4-4f4d-b54f-025a8701b19b.jpg\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rss-efe1b6389a3-bdf4-4f4d-b54f-025a8701b19b-hd-web.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rss-efe1b6389a3-bdf4-4f4d-b54f-025a8701b19b-hd-web.mp4\">https:\/\/efecomunica.efe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/rss-efe1b6389a3-bdf4-4f4d-b54f-025a8701b19b-hd-web.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h3>Taming the &#8216;Bird of God&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Kazakh hunters <strong>affectionately<\/strong> refer to the eagle as the &#8220;<strong>bird of God<\/strong>.&#8221; The primary commandments of training berkut are considered almost <strong>divine<\/strong> secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Muptekeyev revealed some of these, noting that <strong>training<\/strong> should start when these birds of prey are <strong>young<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;As eagles are in the <strong>Red Book<\/strong>, we generally choose chicks that fall from their <strong>nests<\/strong> during strong wind gusts. We raise them at home. They must be fed at least one kilogram of fresh meat daily,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The falconer explained that <strong>berkut<\/strong> can only begin training once they have fully <strong>bonded<\/strong> with their owner. &#8220;It&#8217;s a <strong>lengthy process<\/strong> that requires patience and restraint,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>When the bird gets used to the <strong>falconer&#8217;s arm<\/strong>, the man walks with the eagle, accompanied by a dog and on horseback, to teach it to remain calm in any situation. This way, the three animals learn to hunt as one <strong>team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To turn the birds into <strong>domesticated hunters<\/strong>, accustomed to responding to their names and obeying commands, takes at least between nine months and a year,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Tourist Attraction<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Dayir,&#8221; meaning <strong>New Era<\/strong>, is the name given by this <strong>burkutchi<\/strong> to his latest chick. A name that could be considered prophetic, as Kazakhstan&#8217;s Ministry of Tourism and Sports believes falconry should now become one of the country&#8217;s main attractions due to its significant <strong>tourism<\/strong> potential.<\/p>\n<p>Kazakh authorities have elevated falconry to the status of a <strong>national sport<\/strong>, with state funding supplemented by local and <strong>international tournaments<\/strong> held at least three times a year that occur with the first snow on the northern steppe or southern mountain slopes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From September 8 to 14, the <strong>World Nomad Games<\/strong> will take place in Kazakhstan, featuring a <strong>falconry tournament<\/strong> among competitors from various countries,&#8221; the Kazakh explained.<\/p>\n<p>Once its hood is removed, the <strong>eagle spreads its wings<\/strong>, spanning 2.5 meters, and embarks on a <strong>hunt<\/strong>, spotting prey up to three kilometers away and diving at speeds of 150 kilometers per hour.
