President Tokayev reaffirms Kazakhstan’s foreign policy principles

Astana, Jun 28 (EFE).- Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has reiterated the Central Asian country’s core foreign policy principles amidst the global divide spurred by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

“We prioritize national interests in our foreign policy and advocate resolving disputes through rational compromise,” Tokayev said Thursday during a ceremony honoring journalists on their professional day in the Kazakh capital Astana, the president’s press office, Akorda, reported.

Tokayev stressed Kazakhstan’s “commitment to multilateral cooperation” and adherence to the UN Charter as the “cornerstone of modern international law.”

Kazakhstan shares a 7,500-kilometer (4,660-mile) border with Russia and is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, among other international organizations.

International events as part of foreign policy

Tokayev noted the significance of international events for Kazakh foreign policy this year.

“Next week, Astana will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which will be one of the most important high-level international forums of the past few years. Leaders representing nearly half of the world’s population and heads of key international organizations, including the UN Secretary-General, will attend,” he announced.

Akorda also reported that the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim ibn Hamad Al Thani, will be a guest of honor at the SCO summit in Astana. Additionally, Kazakhstan is chairing five other international bodies this year, which Tokayev hailed as an “unprecedented achievement in the nation’s diplomatic history.

In his speech to journalists and media professionals, Tokyev also talked about recent national reforms, the nuclear power referendum, the role of journalists, and key developments and initiatives.

They included the Clean Kazakhstan Movement, the National Day of the Dombra, a traditional string instrument, and economic developments and infrastructure projects.
