The Kazakh ruling Adilet (Justice) party has comfortably won the elections to the new unicameral parliament (Kurultai) of the largest Central Asian republic, according to exit polls.
According to the poll results, which were broadcast on television, Adilet received the support of over 71% of voters, compared to just over 6% for the Auyl party, which came in second place.
Three other parties—Respublica, the Democratic Party of Kazakhstan “Ak Zhol”, and the National Social Democratic Party—also crossed the 5% threshold required to gain entry into the Kurultai.
The People’s Party of Kazakhstan and the Green Party did not receive the support necessary to enter the new parliament, which for the first time will be unicameral.
According to electoral authorities, more than 9 million of the 12.6 million eligible Kazakh voters participated in the elections.
The new legislature, which was approved in a constitutional referendum in March, will have 145 deputies elected for a five-year term. EFE
