Tokayev appoints Ermek Kosherbayev as new Kazakh foreign minister

Astana, Sep 26 (EFE).- Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Friday appointed the country’s former Deputy Prime Minister, 60-year-old Ermek Kosherbayev, as the new foreign minister.

Kosherbayev replaces Murat Nurtleu, who was appointed advisor to the head of state for international cooperation on trade and investment.

The new foreign minister, a career diplomat, was the ambassador plenipotentiary to Russia between January 2020 and June 2023.

In addition to Kazakh, Kosherbayev speaks Russian, English, German, and Korean.

Tokayev also dismissed Yerzhan Ashikbayev, the ambassador to the United States.

Some media outlets, such as Ulysmedia.kz, pointed out that the reason for Nurtleu’s replacement is that the Foreign Ministry under his command failed to arrange a meeting between Tokayev and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, something that his Uzbek counterpart, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, did achieve.

Coinciding with Mirziyoyev’s visit to the United States, Uzbekistan Airways and Boeing announced the largest order in the history of the Uzbek flag carrier: 22 787 Dreamliner aircraft. EFE
